Google One Dark Web Report
Google One now scans dark-web dumps for your info and pings you if something shows up. Quick notes on how it works and what I'd actually do with an alert.
Google One added a dark web monitoring feature. It's not magic, but it's a sane extra layer if you're already on the plan.
Google rolled out the Dark Web Report in March 2023 alongside broader VPN access for subscribers. The report scans known dark-web marketplaces for data tied to you: name, address, email, phone, even SSN in US flows.
If something matches, Google notifies you and suggests next steps. Found an SSN? They'll point you toward reporting it stolen and freezing credit. It's guidance, not a fix button.
You opt in manually and pick which fields to watch. Google says handling follows their privacy policy whether the data came from you or from a breach dump. You can delete monitored fields or stop scanning anytime.
Breaches aren't slowing down. Big orgs still lose data. This feature doesn't replace good passwords and MFA, but it beats pretending you'll notice a leak six months late on your own.
